Devins stepped aside when the first set of EMT’s arrived. They got to Dee first. And one of the responders asked her name.

“Sydney,” she said.

“Okay Sydney-”

“No, Sydney first…” Dee hurt. Her legs still didn’t feel right and every breath she took was sucking in razors, but Sydney was already coughing up blood.

“Dee honey let them help you.” Mandy couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t accept help.

“Mandy please…Sydney first.” The tears in Dee’s eyes convinced her and she nodded to the young men who immediately moved over to tend to Sydney.

Another EMT crew came in not a minute later and Mandy had to convince Dee to let them help her. “She’s being taken care of hon. Let them check you out.” Dee’s tear filled nod almost broke her.

Mandy looked at the woman she loved and tried to fight the rage building in her as the EMT’s assessed her injuries and loaded her onto the stretcher. Her moan of pain when she was moved broke her heart and when they put the oxygen mask over her face her hands clenched. They had removed the gloves from her hands and she could see the swelling of her right hand and discoloration of her knuckles, and knew some were broken. She leaned down and kissed her tenderly on the forehead.

“I love you Jodee, you’re going to be okay…. you have to be.” She whispered. A quick glance over to where Sydney was being attended to and she knew it was even worse for her. The EMT’s were working at getting her stabilized before they could move her. It didn’t take a doctor to see that Sydney was hurt even worse than Dee. Her heart broke for Elise as she watched her stand back, arms wrapped around herself. She was a little surprised to see Reich with his arm around her shoulders comforting her.

Elise seemed so lost, and she totally understood.

“Michael I’m going with Dee, I need you to stay here and try to track Rodriguez down, and…call Grace please. Let her know what’s going on.” voice softening she looked intensely at him realizing that he was right about where they were being held and if not for him….she shook herself, definitely not something she wanted to think about that right now.

“You got it my friend…she’ll be okay.”.

She patted him on the shoulder. “I hope so Michael.”

Turning around, Devins watched as the EMT’s worked on Russo, she didn’t look too good.

The EMT’s working on Sydney were seriously concerned. Her blood pressure and respiratory rate were very low, and the blood at the corner of her mouth indicated that there was internal bleeding.

Elise wanted to go to her but Reich was holding on to her. “Let them work.” He said quietly. Reich liked this quirky woman, in the short time that he had known her he felt like he had found a kindred spirit and it had hurt him to see her so devastated by Sydney’s disappearance. Now, he didn’t know what else he could do for her except be there.
